In a unique embrace of an otherwise uninteresting aspect of its economy, Saudia Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has announced plans to develop a 150,000-square-meter complex of hotels, restaurants, and entertainment and sporting venues that will be located not within a city or even on land, but on an offshore oil rig.
The project, aptly named The Rig, is yet another part of the country’s broader vision to leverage the country’s unique characteristics and history to create new attractions for visitors from all over the world.
Commenting on the project, a PIF statement noted, “The project is in line with PIF’s strategy 2021-2025 to drive innovation in Saudi Arabia’s tourism and entertainment sectors, providing promising development opportunities to achieve economic diversification in line with the Saudi Vision 2030 objectives.”
