Archaeologists working in northern Egypt near Tel el Samara have uncovered evidence of a civilization that pre-dates the world-famous pyramids of Giza by at least 2,500 years.
As EgyptTravelBlog.com notes, knowledge of some type of ancient settlement in the area is not new, but confirmation of the archaeological site’s extraordinary age is a more recent development:
The 7,000 year old cache of animal bones, plant remains, pottery shards, and tools produced evidence, including rare organic matter form the period, that has allowed for approximate dating of the settlement by researchers.

The Great Pyramid at Giza is approximately 4,500 years old, while the settlement at Tel el Samara is now believed to date back over 7,000 years.
